Drama, as a literary genre, relies on narration, and examining its narrative structure can contribute to elucidating the meaning of a work. Simpson, a contemporary stylistician, provides a framework for ideological analysis through the linguistic analysis of narrative techniques. In this regard, Luʿbat al-Mawt, a play by the Egyptian playwright Tawfiq al-Hakim, offers a suitable context for applying this theory, given its philosophical nature. Accordingly, this study adopts a qualitative content analysis method within a descriptive-analytical approach to identify the narrative techniques and the elements that influence them in Luʿbat al-Mawt in light of Simpson’s narratological theory and to examine how these techniques contribute to conveying al-Hakim’s philosophical outlook. The primary objective is to analyze the narrative structure and the ways in which meaning is represented in the play, focusing on the distinction between first-person and third-person narration and on the psychological point of view within Simpson’s theoretical framework. The findings indicate that third-person narration predominates in Luʿbat al-Mawt, with positive modality being particularly prominent through imperative verbs, boulomaic modality, statements expressing opinions, and reporting verbs. This narrative approach presents the philosophical outlook conveyed in the play, particularly concerning the meaning of life, death, fate, and love, without imposing an interpretation or conclusion, thereby leaving judgment to the reader or audience. Nevertheless, positive modality conveys a sense of certainty and a lack of ambiguity in the viewpoints expressed. Alongside third-person narration, first-person narration is also employed to a limited extent, drawing on positive, negative, and neutral modality. This use introduces variation into the narrative while contributing to the deeper characterization of the figures and a more nuanced representation of their viewpoints..
